Community Activities

Each year the DAKC supports the community through various events, always with an eye towards education and promotion of responsible pet ownership.  Here are a few of the activities we are currently participating in.

   AUBURN SCHOLARSHIP

DAKC is proud to sponsor a scholarship each year for a student majoring in the field of veterinary medicine.  Additional information may be obtained from the Office of Financial Aid at Auburn.

  WALK YOUR PAWS

The DAKC participates in Walk Your Paws every year.  The event is presented by Animal Friends, Inc., a not for profit organization that provides a low cost spay/neuter program.

  COMMUNITY DAY AT THE MALL

In conjunction with other non-profit organizations in the community, DAKC showcases members’ dogs and activities at Colonial Mall.  This allows the public an opportunity to get up close and personal with some of Decatur’s canine citizenry.  Information about various breeds is available and members are present to answer questions.  Demonstrations of obedience, agility, and conformation are also presented.

  EDUCATION PROGRAM

The Decatur Alabama Kennel Club conducts one-hour teaching sessions for third through fifth graders in area schools. The program uses material from the American Kennel Club's Best Friends presentation, which focuses on responsible pet ownership.  The children learn that they have a responsibility to provide for their dogs every day.  Being a "best friend" to a dog means making sure it is properly trained and cared for. The children get hands-on experience in grooming a dog and cleaning its teeth. After the presentation, the children get to pet and play with the dogs.
